John Victor Bean papers, 1868-1871, 1889, 1918-1919.

Letters and genealogical data, largely concerning Bean's experiences and observations as a U.S. Army surgeon at Fort Stevenson, Dakota Territory (1868-1870), particularly on post construction, transportation, military life, and the Arikara, Gros Ventres, Mandan, and Dakota Indians. They also contain information on his subsequent life in Moulton, Iowa, on his family's life in Conneaut, Ohio (1870-1871), and on his brother James's studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1870).
